Chapter Excellence Award Recipients for the 2008-2009 Academic Year
Introduction to the Awards
The fraternity and sorority community at the University of Cincinnati has had a long and rich history, dating back to the 1840’s. Since that time, fraternities and sororities have had a continued and active presence on campus. As evidenced by the backing that President Zimpher consistently gives us, the University is supportive of the goals and ideals of the fraternity and sorority community, which complement the mission of the institution. These ideals include academic achievement, personal development, leadership, campus involvement, community service and civic responsibility.
To improve the overall quality of the fraternity and sorority recognition program at the University of Cincinnati, in 2005, the Program Coordinator for Fraternity and Sorority Life, the Inter-Greek Council Presidents, representatives from Order of Omega and the Greek Affairs Alumni Council created the new and improved Chapter Excellence Awards to replace the former Order of Omega Chapter Awards. These awards are a collaborative effort and can be a set of recommended “standards of excellence” that represent attainable goals that reflect the operations of the “ideal” chapter. They can help with individual chapter accreditation programs since most of the “standards of excellence” parallel many of the items that chapter accreditation plans call for. These awards will allow for more than three chapters to be recognized for exceptional work, which is all that the former awards allowed for.
The Chapter Excellence Awards Program also serves to assist the UC Fraternity and Sorority Community in general and each chapter in particular in functioning at the most effective and efficient levels possible. The program also intends to help provide for the best possible experience for individual members.
The Chapter Excellence Awards Program serves to assess chapters on the minimum standards they should be meeting to be viable and successful members of the UC Fraternity and Sorority Community and of their (inter)national organizations. In doing so, the Fraternity and Sorority Life Office can more accurately target and provide assistance to individual chapters in the specific areas in which they may have fallen short of the recognition standards.
In addition, the University understands that Fraternity and Sorority achievements and excellent chapters often go unnoticed; therefore, the Chapter Excellence Awards Program serves as a tool to publicly recognize all high performing chapters.
Evaluation Method
Each chapter submission is evaluated by members of the Chapter Excellence Award Program Review and Scoring Committee, which is made up of the Program Coordinator for Fraternity and Sorority Life, the Inter-Greek Council Presidents, two members of the Greek Affairs Alumni Council, three members of Order of Omega, and a member of the UC Faculty/Staff/Administration. These individuals are responsible for reviewing and scoring the submissions. The Review and Scoring Committee devote many hours to carefully score and select the appropriate high performing chapters.
